Jewish Senior Life of Metropolitan Detroit (JSL) provides outstanding residences and compassionate services that enable older adults to live healthy, joyous and purposeful lives. We are seeking an astute CFO to join our collaborative leadership team. Preferred candidate will have non-profit and multifamily housing experience.
Position Overview:
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for all JSL financial functions including a budget of 25+ million. These functions include finance and accounting, insurance/risk management and IT systems planning. Additionally, this role participates as a strategic partner to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the executive management team, Finance Committee, and Board of Directors. The position requires the expertise, focus, and influence to be a strong financial leader for the organization. This position must be able to adapt to a continually evolving environment and thrive in an autonomous and deadline-oriented work environment.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
The CFO will oversee all compliance and recognition for government contracts and private grants.
- Plans, develops, organizes, implements, evaluates, and directs the accounting functions of JSL.
- Supports the Controller/Director of Finance in overseeing the accounting process.
- Coordinates the development and monitoring of budgets.
- Oversees cash, investment, and asset management, finance strategies and activities, as well as banking relationships.
- Participates in corporate policy development as a member of the executive team.
- Oversees the Compliance Coordinator and assist in the continued review/development of our risk management plan and revision of the organization’s practices and protocols with the goal of identifying risk and reduce liability.
- Oversees the preparation and communication of monthly and annual financial statements.
- Engages with the members of the finance committee to develop short-long-term financial plans and projections.
- Ensures timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of financial and management reporting for federal and state funders, foundations, financial committee and JSL board of directors: including regular updates on budget performance, forecasts, and financial risks and opportunities.
- With the assistance of the Director of Finance, develops and implements finance, accounting, billing, and auditing procedures while insuring appropriate internal controls
- Interacts with other managers to provide consultative support to planning initiatives through financial and management information analyses, reports, and recommendations.
- Coordinates with the Controller/Director all audits, tax filings, and compliance requirements, ensuring JSL is compliant with all relevant laws and regulations.
- Coordinates with other leaders to evaluate and modify purchasing practices of the organization to control/reduce costs.
- Reviews liability insurance policies; makes recommendations to the CEO for changes; and ensures that appropriate processes are in place for claims.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting or related field; CPA or MBA preferred.
- 7 or more years of progressively responsible experience in financial management with at least 5 years in a nonprofit organization. Muti-family housing experience a plus.
- Demonstrated managerial skills to lead a team of 3-4 employees.
- Solid understanding of nonprofit accounting, revenue recognition, cost allocations and audit requirements.
- Experience in the financial management and reporting of federal and foundation grants, contracts and multi-entity funded projects.
- Ability to translate detailed financial data for strategic use by leadership.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in financial management software.
- Strategic thinking and business acumen.
