Chesapeake Search Partners has been retained by The Berg Corporation, to identify a Chief Financial Officer. The Berg Corporation is a Baltimore-based full-service demolition firm primarily servicing Central and Eastern PA, Delaware, Maryland, Northern Virginia, and the Fredericksburg/Quantico areas.
Description:
The Chief Financial Officer is a key executive partner, responsible for financial strategy, operational efficiencies, M&A execution, and investor relations. This role requires a growth mindset, focusing on creating long-term value for all stakeholders. The ideal candidate will possess strong financial acumen, exceptional leadership skills, and a strategic mindset, with a proven track record in financial planning and analysis. They should demonstrate entrepreneurial thinking, the ability to drive business growth, and experience in the construction industry, ensuring effective financial management and operational efficiency.
Strategic / Executive Responsibilities:
- Serve as a key member of the executive leadership team, working with senior leaders and the Board of Directors to drive long-term value creation across all business areas.
- Collaborate with Estimating and the COO to provide financial insights on project selection, operational efficiencies, and cash management.
- Partner with the President to provide critical analyses and recommendations that drive strategic decisions and growth initiatives.
- Optimize financial strategy, expanding EBITDA margins, identifying and executing on growth opportunities, and managing capital structure.
- Oversee the finance function within the organization which includes four individuals in other key positions such as A/P, A/R, and Payroll.
- Partner and oversee the HR department to assist in managing employment-related matters, including payroll, compensation, benefits, and insurance.
Tactical Responsibilities:
- Lead and mentor the accounting team, including A/R, A/P, Payroll, and Scrap Steel Specialist, ensuring operational efficiency and accuracy.
- Oversee monthly financial reporting processes, including Generally Accepted Accounting Principal reconciliation, Work-In-Progress report creation, bank reconciliations, journal entries, and general ledger closing.
- Ensure timely distribution of financial packages to senior management by the 12th of each month.
- Lead the annual budget process, working with the Board for approval and ensuring that the budget aligns with strategic goals.
- Collaborate with external accounting firms on financial closing and tax return preparation.
- Optimize Vista Accounting Software for key financial processes such as purchasing, invoice approvals, subcontractor agreements, and meeting financial deadlines.
- Oversee the implementation and maintenance of project management modules, including WIP reporting and cost tracking, ensuring project profitability.
- Train Project Managers (PMs) to review WIP reports, identify cost issues, and monitor project profitability.
- Expedite the change order process and ensure strong cost management throughout the project lifecycle.
- Develop and track Key Performance Indicators, utilizing dashboards to provide executive leadership with actionable financial insights.
Other Key Initiatives:
- Develop and implement a shop inventory system to accurately track parts and work orders, training shop personnel on proper costing and expense control.
- Continuous improvement of the Purchase Order system and internal processes to ensure efficiency and compliance.
Qualifications:
- Vista Accounting Software experience preferred.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel required.
- Strong technical accounting skills with the ability to lead a high-performing team.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills to clearly present financial data and insights to senior leadership, Board of Directors, and external investors.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (CPA or MBA preferred).
- 10+ years of progressive experience in senior financial leadership roles, preferably within the construction industry or related sectors.
- Extensive knowledge of financial management, accounting principles, and financial reporting.
