The Chief of Staff to the CFO serves as a strategic partner and operational extension of the Chief Financial Officer. This role blends financial management, payroll oversight, general ledger integrity, business intelligence, operational analysis, administrative oversight, and strategic finance.
This is a CFO development-track role. The successful candidate will progressively assume greater responsibility for financial oversight, operational improvement, capital allocation, and corporate infrastructure management, with the expectation of evolving into a future CFO for the company.
This role requires strong financial acumen, operational discipline, and the ability to execute high-priority tasks without direct supervision.
Responsibilities
1. Financial Management & Accounting
- Maintain integrity of the general ledger, including journal entries, reconciliations, and documentation
- Ensure proper classification of revenue, expenses, and capital expenditures
- Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes
- Coordinate with external CPA for tax filings and compliance
2. Payroll, HR & Compliance Oversight
- Own payroll processing end-to-end (in coordination with Corporate Compliance Manager)
- Review time records in conjunction with department heads
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll laws
- Oversee employee onboarding documentation and records management
- Support benefits administration and renewals
3. Admin & Corporate Infrastructure Management
- Oversee administrative functions currently handled by Corporate Compliance Office as appropriate
- Ensure company certifications with government agencies (e.g., MBE/DBE, DOT registrations, licensing renewals) are mantained
- Track renewal deadlines and ensure timely submission of required documentation
- Act as a catch-all execution partner for high-priority operational tasks delegated by CFO
4. Business Intelligence & Analytics
- Develop KPI reports for revenue, utilization, backlog, job cost performance, and overhead
- Analyze project margins and labor productivity
- Identify inefficiencies in operational workflows and recommend process improvements - this will require field and site visits
- Build financial models supporting pricing, hiring, and capital investment decisions
- Support technology adoption and workflow automation initiatives
5. Strategic Finance, Capital Allocation, and M&A
- Assist in evaluating capital expenditures and equipment investments
- Build ROI models and sensitivity analyses
- Support financial due diligence for acquisitions, partnerships, or joint ventures
- Gradually assume increasing responsibility in strategic financial decision-making
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business, Civil Engineering or related field
- Strong understanding of financial statements and accounting systems
- Advanced Excel and financial modeling capability
- High attention to detail with strong execution discipline
- Ability to operate independently and manage confidential matters
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in finance, accounting, FP&A, consulting, or operational finance
- Experience managing payroll and compliance processes
- Experience in construction, engineering, or project-based environments
- Proficiency in VBA, MS Power Apps, Power BI, or Python
