Job Title: Chief Financial Officer (CFO) - Nonprofit Organization
Overview:
We are seeking an experienced and strategic Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to lead the finance division of a mission-driven nonprofit organization focused on community development, economic growth, and opportunity creation. This is a key leadership role responsible for driving financial strategy, ensuring fiscal sustainability, and supporting the organization’s long-term vision across initiatives including real estate, lending, broadband, and business development.
The CFO will report directly to the President & CEO and work closely with senior leadership to manage finances, structure complex transactions, and guide strategic decisions that support organizational growth and impact.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management:
- Oversee accounting, budgeting, cash flow, investments, and banking relationships
- Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting, forecasting, and regulatory compliance
- Develop predictive models and financial analyses to guide operational and strategic decisions
- Serve as the primary liaison with external auditors and finance committees
- Lead tax planning and oversee preparation and review of tax filings
- Ensure internal controls and compliance with federal, state, and local financial requirements
Strategic Planning & Leadership:
- Partner with executive leadership to develop financial plans and forecasts
- Participate in corporate policy development and provide financial guidance to the board
- Collaborate with department heads on budget planning and resource allocation
- Represent the organization to financial partners, investors, foundations, and government agencies
- Stay current on nonprofit finance best practices and evolving regulatory requirements
Fund & Investment Management:
- Develop strategies for co-investment partnerships with lenders, donors, and investors
- Support strategic planning aligned with long-term financial goals
- Lead fundraising and investment initiatives, including due diligence and performance tracking
- Manage existing investments and prepare detailed reporting for stakeholders
Information Technology Oversight:
- Oversee IT budgeting, strategy, and infrastructure to support organizational goals
- Ensure data security, system reliability, and compliance with data protection standards
- Lead digital transformation initiatives to enhance operational efficiency
- Manage relationships with external technology vendors and service providers
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field (CPA, CFA, or MBA preferred)
- Minimum 10 years of senior financial leadership experience (CFO, CIO, or equivalent), ideally within a complex, multi-affiliate organization
- Proven experience developing and executing innovative financial strategies
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, fund and grant management, and compliance
- Experience managing financial systems and working with IT teams on accounting software
- Exceptional communication, analytical, leadership, and organizational skills
