A mission-driven economic development organization working in close partnership with municipal and public sector agencies to advance equitable economic prosperity in Newark. Operating at the intersection of public finance, economic development policy, and community investment, the organization manages a diverse portfolio of initiatives with an annual operating budget exceeding $10 million.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a strategic and experienced Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to serve as the organization’s senior financial executive. This is a highly visible leadership role responsible for financial stewardship, governance, compliance, and operational oversight within a public-sector or quasi-governmental environment.
The CFO will serve as a key advisor to the President & CEO, supervise a team of 3–4 professionals, and act as Treasurer to the Board of Directors.
Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Leadership
- Lead budgeting, forecasting, treasury, and cash management functions
- Oversee stewardship of public, grant, and restricted funds
- Ensure transparent financial reporting to the Board, funders, and public agencies
- Develop long-range financial models and scenario analyses
Governance & Compliance
- Serve as liaison to external auditors
- Oversee audits, tax filings, and financial statements
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
- Support Board and audit committee functions
Capital & Fund Management
- Oversee structuring and financing of real estate and economic development initiatives
- Manage investment portfolios and capital allocation
- Maintain relationships with government finance entities and lending institutions
Operations & IT Oversight
- Supervise finance and operations team
- Oversee office operations and vendor management
- Provide executive oversight of IT strategy, budgeting, and cybersecurity compliance
Ideal Candidate Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field (CPA, MBA, or CFA preferred)
- Experience in public, nonprofit, or quasi-public financial leadership roles
- Experience managing budgets of $10M+
- Strong knowledge of grant accounting, public-sector compliance, and fund management
- Experience working with Boards of Directors
- Proven people leadership experience
- Strong communication skills and comfort engaging public officials and stakeholders
- Commitment to public service, equity, and community impact

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $170,000.00 - $180,000.00 per year
