About The Role
Skillz, a fast-growing, NYSE-listed company at the forefront of gaming, media, and technology, is seeking an exceptional Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join its executive leadership team. This is a unique opportunity to help lead a public company through a pivotal growth phase as it scales operations, pursues strategic acquisitions, and continues to push towards long-term profitability.
The CFO will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) while serving as a core member of the senior leadership team, helping to shape Skillz’s long-term strategy and financial vision. The CFO will lead all aspects of finance—including IR, corporate development, FP&A, and accounting—while building a best-in-class finance function to support the next phase of growth. Skillz is at a critical inflection point. The company is now entering a new growth phase — marked by consistent, sequential gains in both revenue and user engagement over the last three quarters.
The ideal CFO candidate will be a strategic and visionary finance leader with expertise in public markets, investor relations, and strategic finance. They must bring not only strong financial acumen, but also the ability to operate as a key thought partner to the CEO, executive leadership team, and board of directors. This individual will play a critical role in shaping long-term strategy, driving financial performance, and unlocking value across the organization. As a cultural leader, the CFO will help build a high-performance, accountable, and entrepreneurial finance organization.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a strategic and analytical finance executive and trusted thought partner to the CEO and executive leadership team—leading long-term financial planning, capital allocation, and strategic decision-making to drive growth initiatives and create shareholder value.
- Lead all aspects of the Company’s finance organization, including FP&A, accounting, tax, treasury, financial reporting, compliance, investor relations, and capital markets activities.
- Drive financial and operational excellence through disciplined forecasting, budgeting, and performance measurement, including the development of robust KPIs and dashboards.
- Partner with leaders across the business to ensure strong financial planning, resource allocation, and business alignment.
- Play a key leadership role in evaluating and executing M&A opportunities, partnerships, and other growth initiatives.
- Deliver clear, impactful financial presentations to the executive team and board, providing insights that drive strategic alignment and informed decision-making.
- Build and coach the existing finance team to operate with the rigor of a public company, and scale the team as needed.
- Provide overall leadership and mentorship across the organization, maintaining a positive, dynamic, and fun environment where the team is engaged, challenged to succeed, and rewarded appropriately.
Key Competencies
- Smart, energetic, and excited about continuously learning, improving, and streamlining processes through technology.
- Dynamic leader who can drive operational improvements at scale, while honoring the history of the company and treating all employees with respect.
- Passion for the creative space - gaming, media, entertainment or adtech.
- A strong sense of urgency, understanding what needs to get done to achieve desired growth.
- Collaborative and proactive by nature with strong cross-functional and integrative organizational skills.
- Strong business acumen and mental agility to succeed in a highly dynamic environment.
- Impeccable integrity and ethical standards.
- A desire to roll up their sleeves to get work done via locking arms side by side with the team.
- Responsiveness and collegial approach with peers, direct reports, and managers.
Professional Qualifications
- Demonstrated success as a CFO or senior finance executive at a publicly traded company, ideally in adtech or media and entertainment tech.
- A strategic mindset with strong analytical skills and the ability to drive business results.
- Proven ability to lead investor relations, communicate with external stakeholders, and work effectively with a public Board of Directors.
- Expertise in mergers & acquisitions, including evaluation, deal structuring, due diligence, and post-deal integration.
- A collaborative, hands-on leader who thrives in dynamic, entrepreneurial settings.
- Ability to manage in an entrepreneurial environment with a lead role in setting prioritization and resource allocation targets amidst an abundance of opportunity.
