Position Summary:
Reporting to the President & CEO, the Chief Financial Officer (“CFO”) CFO will have oversight for an operating budget that is currently $49 million. A primary function of the role will be to work effectively as a thought partner to the President & CEO, Board of Trustees, Finance Committee and executive team to set goals and direction, manage emerging strategic and operational issues, facilitate cross-department collaboration, ensure financial stability for the organization into the future, and nurture the organization's culture and values. The CFO will be highly effective in translating complex financial data into understandable concepts that allows for effective decision-making.
The CFO will have the ability to balance strategic thinking with hands on day-to-day operations. Leading a team of 10, the CFO will be responsible for overseeing all fiscal and fiduciary responsibilities for the organization, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting and budget processes, conducting strategic analysis of business performance and forecasting, and providing oversight of The organization's finance function. The CFO will have the aptitude to build a long-term financial forecast, coordinate audits and enhance and implement financial accounting systems, processes, tools and control systems.
Core Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership to the finance team, work to ensure consistency across functions and model a customer-service oriented approach to providing exceptional service to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Serve as a thought partner and provide financial and strategic support to the President & CEO and Board of Directors in order to support Spectrum for Living’s long-term growth and financial viability.
- Develop successful and trusting relationships with the organization’s Board members, senior management team, finance team, external auditors, financial entities, funders and vendors through open and transparent communication and a team-oriented approach.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization’s finance function and provide leadership, direction and supervision to the Finance Department staff engaged in day to day internal accounting and cash management.
- Working with the President & CEO, Controller, and Director of Billing, develop yearly operating plan and budget, present plan to the Board of Directors; monitor financial performance to budget goals and report results.
- Provide updated and frequent financial and budgeting insights and analysis to the President & CEO and Finance Committee. Create dashboards and other tools to clearly articulate the organization’s financial position and goals to senior staff and leadership.
- Represent the organization externally to government agencies, auditors and the general public on matters financial involving Spectrum for Living.
- Oversee all external audit responses. Prepare responses to findings and implement recommendations.
- Ensure that all appropriate tax filings and supplemental audit financials, including Federal A133 and IRS 990s, are submitted on a timely basis.
- Work closely with the Controller to oversee all financial reporting, including monthly Balance Sheets, P & L Statements, and Cash Flow Scenarios. The CFO will also work with the Controller and Director of Billing to ensure sound AP/AR and payroll functions.
- Work closely with the President & CEO, Finance Committee, and outside auditors to oversee the timely completion and accuracy of audits.
- Review quarterly expenditure reports for contracts and grants.
- Report all significant financial matters to the President & CEO.
- Attend Spectrum for Living Development, Inc. Board of Trustees meetings as required.
- Coordinate and prepare materials for monthly Board Finance Committee meetings.
- Attend quarterly benefit provider planning and financial meetings.
- Oversee and maintain records of agency’s restricted accounts in collaboration with the Development Department and Executive Team.
- Provide supporting documentation for grants and annual reports.
- Design and implement Medicaid Fee for Service accounting, billing and reporting processes.
- Ensure financial controls and procedures are streamlined and that clear policies are implemented to create proper checks and balances and best practices.
- Select, implement, and manage appropriate financial systems as needed.
- Perform any other duties deemed necessary by the President & CEO.
Qualifications:
- Passion for and commitment to the mission and core values of Spectrum for Living;
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant field; CPA or Master’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration preferred;
- 10+ years of senior financial leadership experience in a nonprofit or business environment; familiarity with New Jersey Department of Human Services, Medicaid, or other public entity contracting guidelines preferred;
- Strong leadership skills featuring a transparent, collaborative style, along with demonstrated experience leading teams to excellent results;
- Highly strategic mindset, including the ability to set a vision for the finance function within a large organization and execute on it;
- Strong organizational and financial management skills and excellent budgeting and business planning skills; experience with nonprofit/fund accounting a strong plus;
- Strong affinity for technology and experience working with financial systems. Familiarity with Foothold AWARDS and SAGE accounting software a plus;
- A demonstrated ability to think strategically in seizing opportunities, assessing risks, streamlining systems, and reducing expenses;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and an ability to connect with and present to a variety of stakeholders including staff, leadership and the Board of Directors;
- Thorough knowledge of regulations, policies and procedures which apply to accounting and financing in a not-for-profit environment required;
- Knowledge of automated payroll, financial, and accounting systems required;
- Experience in overseeing grants and contracts; and
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
