About the Role
Reporting to the CEO and Board, the Chief Financial Officer is the senior-most financial leader of the organization, responsible for both strategic financial leadership and hands-on execution. This individual will step into a transformation environment, bringing structure, discipline, and forward looking insight to support growth and long-term sustainability. The organization requires a leader who can build, optimize, and lead, while also being comfortable operating within a lean team and engaging directly in day-to-day financial operations when needed. The CFO will work closely with the Board and Finance Committee, manage banking relationships, and play a critical role in navigating leadership transition and organizational evolution.
Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Serve as a key advisor to the CEO and Board on financial strategy, capital allocation, and long term sustainability
- Lead financial planning, scenario modeling, and decision support to guide organizational growth
- Partner with executive leadership to align financial strategy with mission-driven outcomes
Financial Management and Operations
- Oversee all accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and audit processes
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, IRS regulations, and nonprofit financial standards
- Strengthen internal controls, policies, and financial discipline across the organization
- Lead and complete ongoing financial system implementation, including NetSuite, and process optimization to ensure on-time financial reporting
Transformation and Infrastructure
- Enhance financial strength by maximizing revenue sources and streamlining cost structure
- Drive improvements in data integrity, reporting accuracy, and financial transparency
- Lead initiatives related to audit readiness, system integration, and operational efficiency
Leadership and Team Management
- Lead and develop a lean finance team, including Senior Accountant, AP, and AR or Client Services
- Operate as a hands-on leader, comfortable executing while building team capability
- Establish accountability, ownership, and performance standards within the function
Board and External Stakeholder Engagement
- Serve as financial liaison to the Board
- Present financial insights and recommendations to Board members and external stakeholders
- Manage relationships with banks, auditors, and external advisors
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or related field (Master’s or CPA preferred).
- 10+ years of progressive finance and accounting leadership experience, as a CFO or VP Finance
- Background in nonprofit or for-profit environments, ideally within $10M to $50M organizations
- Candidates from for-profit backgrounds should have meaningful exposure to nonprofit organizations through board service or volunteer involvement
- Proven ability to lead in transformation environments, not just maintain steady-state operations
- Strong financial modeling and analytical capabilities, with willingness to execute hands-on
- Experience building or improving financial infrastructure, systems, and internal controls
- Demonstrated ability to interface with Boards, Finance Committees, lenders, and external stakeholders
- Hands-on leadership style with comfort managing a lean team and owning day-to-day execution
- Strong communication skills with the ability to translate financial insights to non-finance audiences
- High ownership mindset, low ego, and genuine alignment with a mission-driven organization
Pay range and compensation package
- Base - Due to this being a mission-based non-profit the base compensation can be up to $200,000
