JOB TITLE: Chief Financial Officer
REPORTS TO: Founding Director and Chief Operations Officer

PAY RANGE $200,000 - $250,000 annually

THE BROAD
The Broad’s mission is to make contemporary art accessible to the widest possible audience. Founded in 2015 on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad, the museum offers free general admission and presents an active Program of special exhibitions and innovative live events, all within a landmark building designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro. Welcoming around 900,000 visitors per year, The Broad is a bustling public space and serves as home to the Broad collection, one of the world’s leading collections of postwar and contemporary art, which continues to grow as new artists and artworks are added. The museum is also the headquarters of The Broad Art Foundation’s worldwide lending library, which has been loaning collection works to museums around the world since 1984. An expansion of the museum will open before the 2028 summer Olympics in Los Angeles, creating even greater public access.
ABOUT THE POSITION
The Broad is seeking a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to lead all financial functions of the museum and serve as a strategic partner to the Founding Director, COO, and Board of Directors during a pivotal period of growth and transformation. This includes financial oversight of a major expansion and long-term endowment planning.
Reporting to Founding Director and COO, the CFO will oversee finance, accounting, treasury, tax, financial compliance, bond reporting, and risk management. The CFO will bring strategic vision, operational discipline, and a deep commitment to the museum’s mission and long-term sustainability. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a track record of senior financial leadership, cultural fluency, and institutional stewardship. The CFO will bring a systems-level understanding of how financial, operational, and programmatic functions intersect in a cultural institution.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Financial Leadership
· Lead institutional financial strategy, including forecasting, scenario planning, and multi-year budget development.
· Advise the Founding Director and COO on key financial decisions and capital allocation aligned with museum priorities.
· Partner with the Executive team, Finance Committee, and Board to develop the museum’s long-term financial strategy and expansion-related capital planning.
· Serve as a key advisor to the Finance and Audit Committees of the Board, providing financial insights that guide institutional strategy and governance.
· Oversee the financial aspects of any debt obligations, including tax-exempt bond compliance.
· Oversee endowment planning.
Finance & Accounting Oversight
· Direct all aspects of accounting operations, including budgeting, tax, treasury, financial reporting including financial statements, Insurance, GAAP compliance, and annual audit.
· Ensure accurate, timely, and transparent reporting of financial results, dashboards, and forecasts to leadership and Board committees.
· Establish and refine internal controls, financial procedures, and risk management protocols.
· Lead the preparation of financial documents for the annual audit and regulatory filings.
Organizational Management
· Lead and mentor the Finance team, supporting staff development, succession planning, and operational excellence.
· Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal tax and financial regulations governing the operations of nonprofit corporations and private operating foundations.
· Collaborate with teams on major initiatives, sponsorships, grants, capital projects, and earned revenue opportunities.
· Serve as liaison to the Finance and Audit Committees of the Board of Directors.
Technology and Efficiency
· Champion the use of financial technologies (e.g., Sage Intacct, dashboards, automation) to increase insight and efficiency.
· Lead the development of a financial technology roadmap that supports scale, insight, and integration; oversee implementation and training to ensure adoption.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
· Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or related field; MBA, CPA, CFA, or related advanced credential strongly preferred.
· Minimum of 10 years of progressive financial experience, including 5+ years in a CFO or senior leadership role.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and advanced financial systems, including ERP and accounting platforms.
· Experience with nonprofit financial management, including project accounting, fund accounting, and grant compliance.
· GAAP expertise, investment reporting, tax compliance, and audit processes.
· Outstanding communication skills and experience presenting to executive leadership and Boards.
· Proven ability to lead and mentor a finance team in a growth-oriented, mission-driven organization.
· Experience with endowment management, capital projects, long-term financial modeling, and debt instruments (e.g., tax exempt municipal bonds).
· Approach work with integrity and honesty.
· Demonstrated strategic leadership and ability to inspire confidence across departments.
· Deep understanding of financial stewardship in a nonprofit or cultural institution context.
· Collaborative, respectful, and adaptive leadership style.
· Support and demonstrate the museum’s culture of developing a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible environment for staff, contract staff, vendors, and visitors.
SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
· Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull items weighing up to 25 pounds. A full range of body motion is required on the job to include frequent sitting, bending, stooping, crouching, lifting, carrying, walking, and standing.
SCHEDULE
· Work is typically performed onsite between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Exempt roles may occasionally require additional hours to meet business demands.
PAY RANGE
· $200,000 – $250,000 annually, based on applicant’s education, experience, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
