Job Summary:
Our client is seeking an Interim CFO will provide experienced executive-level financial leadership, ensuring financial stability and strong stewardship of donor and grant funding. They’ll partner strategically with the CEO and Board, overseeing day-to-day financial management and maintaining continuity during the CFO transition. We’re specifically seeking candidates with prior CFO or senior finance leadership experience in a nonprofit organization, deep knowledge of nonprofit accounting, GAAP, audits, and grant-funded environments, strong board-level communication skills, and the ability to quickly assess risk, stabilize operations, and effectively lead teams through change.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as the senior finance leader for the organization on an interim basis.
- Provide leadership and direction to the finance function, including management of direct reports.
- Support a smooth transition from the outgoing CFO and maintain continuity of financial operations.
- Oversee nonprofit accounting activities, including fund accounting, grants, and donor-restricted funds.
- Lead financial oversight related to the fiscal year-end process.
- Support audit readiness and coordination.
- Assist with board financial preparation and related reporting materials.
- Oversee required tax and regulatory finance filings, including 990-related processes.
- Partner closely with organizational leadership, including the COO, on financial priorities and decision-making.
- Help onboard and provide leadership support to controller.
- Review existing process documentation and use it to maintain effective execution during the interim period.
- Navigate a changing environment with a hands-on, practical approach to problem-solving.
Required Qualifications:
- Prior experience serving as a Chief Financial Officer is required.
- Nonprofit industry experience is required.
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including fund accounting, grants, contracts, and donor restrictions.
- Experience leading finance operations through audit and year-end reporting cycles.
- Familiarity with board-level financial reporting and preparation.
- Experience overseeing tax and compliance-related finance processes, including 990 filings.
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams and manage multiple direct reports.
- Ability to step into an organization quickly and provide steady financial leadership during a transition.
- Comfortable working in an environment with established processes while also adapting as needed.
- Strong judgment, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working alongside new or evolving finance leadership structures
