IMMEDIATE INTERIM OPPORTUNITY
Interim SVP, Finance & Business Operations
Duration: 4- 6 Months
Reports: Chief Executive Officer
Location: Toronto, Ontario (Hybrid)
We are supporting a large and high-profile Canadian not-for-profit organization seeking an experienced Interim SVP, Finance & Business Operations for a 4–6-month engagement. The Interim SVP will lead a diverse team of approximately 30 staff, divided into 3 business units: Finance, Accounting & Payroll, Information Technology & Data, and Facilities, Procurement and Shared Services.
This mandate is built for a senior executive who can step in quickly, continue the operating rhythm of the three business units, coach leaders, and move priorities forward.
Core Responsibilities
1) Team Leadership
- Provide visible, steady executive leadership following a short period of leadership absence, ensuring continuity and momentum across the three business units.
- Establish a clear operating cadence (check-ins, weekly Leadership Team meeting escalation pathways) so leaders and teams have structure, pace, and confidence.
- Coach and support senior leaders to help them navigate ambiguity, manage workload pressure, and stay aligned on priorities.
- Participate in organization’s Senior Leadership Team activities, including a weekly team meeting, to bring issues and perspectives from the Finance & Business Operations as well as to participate in the overall management of the organization
2) Execute Defined Strategy & Drive Delivery
- Support business leaders in delivering the Board-approved 2026 annual business plan and budget ensuring enterprise priorities remain on-track and teams are aligned to goals, accountabilities, and measurable outcomes.
- Support organization-wide planning and performance management, including annual operating planning and practical progress measurement.
3) Finance Leadership (Forecasting, Controls, Decision Support)
- Support the team through an established annual forecasting process, bringing discipline to assumptions, timelines, and inputs while ensuring leaders feel supported.
- Ensure strong financial stewardship: clear reporting, decision-quality analysis, appropriate controls, and “no surprises” management for leadership and governance stakeholders.
- Provide executive oversight across Finance as a core operational enabler for sustainable organizational performance.
4) Information Technology & Data (Practical, Outcome-Based)
- Provide executive oversight to IT & Data 2026 business plan priorities and ensure delivery focus across current initiatives and operational support.
- Act as co-Executive Sponsor of the organization’s website & marketing tech stack upgrade project, supporting the Project Team in resourcing, decision-making, and launch readiness.
- Oversee the implementation of a new AI policy, aligning leadership expectations, risk posture, practical controls, and adoption guidance for teams.
5) Governance & Board Readiness
- Partner with the CEO/senior leadership to prepare for Committee meetings in August and Board meetings in September, ensuring materials are clear, strategically framed, decision-ready, and supported by credible data and risk considerations.
- Strengthen executive reporting and narrative (progress, risks, trade-offs, decisions required), supporting confident governance and stakeholder alignment.
6) Operational Excellence Across Business Operations
- Provide oversight across core operational functions—ensuring processes, controls, and administrative “building blocks” are working well enough to support outcomes
- As appropriate, review and refine business processes/procedures to improve efficiency and reduce operational drag.
- Maintain strong vendor/partner oversight to ensure continuity, service levels, and value-for-money.
7) Risk, Policy, and Organizational Health
- Ensure the organization’s risk lens remains active and practical—supporting leadership with risk identification, mitigation actions, and governance confidence.
- Maintain and/or strengthen policies that enable effective operations and a healthy culture (including technology and people-related policies).
- Help foster an inclusive, high-performing environment where staff and leaders can thrive, especially under the pressure of an interim period.
8) Non-Profit & Fundraising Context
- Bring executive judgment shaped by the realities of NFP operations, governance, and stakeholder environments—supporting delivery while remaining mission- and donor-aware.
- Support leadership in navigating fundraising/revenue considerations as part of the broader operational and financial context.
Candidate Profile
- Senior executive with extensive experience leading diverse teams and complex portfolios.
- CPA required; strong financial leadership with credibility in forecasting, controls, and decision support.
- Proven leadership across Finance and IT (able to bridge operational reality with strategic intent).
- Experience in not-for-profit environments, ideally with exposure to fundraising complexity and governance expectations.
