JOB TITLE: Chief Financial Officer
LOCATION: Central Office
WORK YEAR: 260 days

REPORTS TO: Superintendent
Provides fiscal leadership for District programs and services to ensure the financial stability of the District and to support the effectiveness of schools and the success of all students. The Chief Financial Officer leads key financial processes and engages in the following activities:
- Supervises the management of the financial affairs of the District.
- Directs the payroll, purchasing, accounts payable, and insurance activities of the District.
- Directs the District investment program.
- Monitors and aligns resources to meet the changing needs of the District’s customers.
- Creates new ways to integrate District planning, internal and external, into the work of the department.
- Takes an active leadership role in programmatic planning, including budget, and/or bond election and capital financing efforts.
- Plans for efficient and effective use of resources; evidence of application of creative initiative to shrinking financial resources.
- Directs the development and preparation of the annual budget and refines and improves budgeting procedures as appropriate, including the measurement of quality results for the expenditure of dollars.
- Uses of a valid and reliable data-based approach to planning, problem solving, and decision making that leads to improvements in the effectiveness and efficiency of department functions and staff performance.
- Employs effective management of the District’s capital infrastructure.
- Reviews all appropriate District contracts.
- Applies internal control systems that are operationally effective and that provide reasonable assurance that resources are adequately safeguarded, efficiently utilized and aligned with District goals, providing for:

Effective financial services operations, inclusive of purchasing.
- A cost-effective nutrition services program meeting the needs of the students and community.
- Promotion of, and adherence to, Board of Education policies, District procedures, and other rules and regulations that may be established by the District.
- Interprets the District’s financial position to the Board, staff, and community.
- Preparation of necessary materials for the Board of Education as they pertain to this area of responsibility.
- Acts as an advisor to the Superintendent on all matters relating to the business and financial affairs of the District.

Supervises and evaluates staff to promote their professional growth, as well as to improve District programs and services to schools and students. The Chief Financial Officer facilitates processes and engages in activities leading to:
- The pursuit of staff development opportunities by department personnel to increase their knowledge, skills, and effectiveness as department leaders.
- Establishes an environment that provides for positive support and recognition.
- Various methods to seek and observe employee needs and concerns that provide quality feedback for employee self-improvement.
- Informs department personnel of the District’s formal/informal systems and processes, including Board of Education policies and procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Supervises and evaluates practices incorporating data-based decision making, collection, and analysis of information regarding the degree to which staff performances support the needs and effectiveness of the District and its schools.
- Uses evaluation recommendations, information, and data to set and monitor growth goals and/or performance objectives, as well as success in achieving them.
- Provides professional development activities that support improvements in work responsibilities or changes in District direction.
- Provides useful and timely feedback to department personnel regarding performance.
Demonstrates personal and professional growth necessary for continuous improvement of District programs and services to schools and students.
- Maintains knowledge and skills in program planning and evaluation, financial services, nutrition services, operations and maintenance, security and emergency planning, transportation services, purchasing, and intergovernmental relations.
- Models of an appropriate attitude regarding professional development by active involvement in seminars, presentations, and leadership roles within the District, state, and/or nation.
- Demonstrates willingness to accept and use criticism or change in District direction as the basis for modification of performance and acquisition of new knowledge and skills.
- Models of the use of performance data and evidence of impact on District programs and services as a part of planning for professional growth and changes in performance.
- Prompt compliance of recommendations for improvements in performance from the Superintendent.
- Collaborates with staff, parents, community, and local, state, and federal agencies to establish and achieve District goals and priorities.
The Chief Financial Officer facilitates processes and engages in the following activities:

EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, public or educational administration, or related fields preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of seven years’ experience in school business administration and operations preferred.
- Minimum of seven years’ experience in supervision/leadership.
- K-12 education finance and operations experience strongly preferred.
- Preferred training, knowledge and/or experience in the following areas: finance and business management, planning, evaluation, nutrition service management, operations and maintenance, school construction, print shop, transportation services, security and emergency planning, and intergovernmental relations.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions required the following physical demands: some lifting up to 50 pounds, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires sitting, walking, and standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
CLEARANCE:
Must clear online background check and FBI Fingerprint check through the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
SALARY:
$126,891.00 - $186,421.00
Salary placement is on Range 8 of the Administrative salary schedule and is based on prior related experience.
BENEFITS:
Employees who are scheduled to work 30 or more hours per week are eligible to obtain district health benefits, which include medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance and supplemental benefits. Positions that qualify for health benefits also qualify for leave, which could include vacation and daily leave to be determined by the position and number of days assigned. Sheridan School District No. 2 is a public employer and participates in the Colorado Public Employees’ Retirement Association (PERA). All employees are required by state statute to contribute 10.5% of their salary on a pre-tax basis to PERA. The District contributes 20.4%.
