Chief Financial Officer (Interim / Consulting)

Compensation: $110-$125/hour

Overview
A well-established, mission-driven organization in the social impact sector is seeking an Interim Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to support its executive leadership team during a critical period. This role will serve as a key strategic partner to the CEO, overseeing financial strategy, planning, and operations.
This opportunity is ideal for a hands-on finance executive who can quickly assess current infrastructure, provide strategic insight, and execute on both immediate priorities and longer-term financial objectives within a complex, multi-revenue environment.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Financial Planning
- Partner with the CEO and senior leadership to shape and execute financial strategy
- Evaluate organizational performance against budgets and long-range plans, providing actionable recommendations
- Lead multi-year financial planning, including scenario modeling tied to evolving programs and revenue streams
- Present financial insights and recommendations to executive stakeholders and governing bodies
Financial Operations & Oversight
- Oversee core finance functions, including accounting, reporting, budgeting, and cash management
- Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards and regulatory requirements
- Lead the annual budgeting process and ongoing forecasting cycles
- Strengthen internal controls, policies, and financial procedures
- Manage cash flow and liquidity planning to support operational needs
- Oversee financial reporting and coordinate external audit processes
Program & Funding Support
- Provide financial oversight and guidance related to grants, contracts, and program funding
- Support leadership in evaluating new initiatives, partnerships, and funding opportunities
- Develop and refine cost allocation methodologies across multiple programs and funding sources
- Collaborate cross-functionally to align financial planning with operational execution
Systems & Process Improvement
- Assess financial systems and tools; recommend enhancements or upgrades as needed
- Improve reporting capabilities to deliver timely, accurate, and decision-useful financial data
- Drive efficiencies across financial workflows and cross-functional processes
Team Leadership
- Lead and mentor finance team members across accounting and financial planning functions
- Support professional development and performance management
- Foster a collaborative, accountable, and solutions-oriented team environment
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA and/or MBA preferred)
- 15+ years of progressive financial leadership experience
- Experience in complex organizations with multiple revenue streams (social impact, nonprofit, or similarly structured environments preferred)
- Experience managing government and institutional funding sources
- Strong background in financial planning, analysis, and cash flow management
- Expertise in accounting operations, compliance, and audit management
- Familiarity with ERP systems and enterprise financial platforms
- Proven ability to partner with executive leadership and governing bodies
- Strong communication skills with the ability to translate financial data into strategic insights
- Hands-on leadership style with comfort operating at both strategic and operational levels
